Contemporary Art presentation.. Art or Kitsch?

OK so I have to do a presenation on and artist for my art class.. and I have no idea who to choose or where to start.. I guess im asking for suggestions on an artist that would be interesting or easy to do... this is the assignment:





Your task is to analyze and critique the work of a contemporary artist. Choose a work by that artist created after 1960. Research the development of the artist using texts, on-line commentary, and exhibition history. You may refer to another art historian or critic but ultimately this critique is founded on your informed opinion developed by observing and reflecting on the art we have studied in this course.





Describe the intention of the artist and critique the work of art based on the following criteria:





Is this artwork kitsch?


Is the artwork an historic development based on the notion progress of modern art?


Is the artist influenced by nature or culture?


Is the artist responding to an issue that reflects art / culture / politics / gender?

You should analyze Kara Walker's contemporary works. Her work pertains to all of the above questions. She constructs "cut-out" silhouette figures and ambiguously places them to create a satrical look at American history, namely, slave oppression. She's got a great sense of humor and also advocates a very controversial perspective. Here's a link to her web site. She's pretty widely known so you'll find a lot of information on her exhibits and art works.
