Is art sinful?

I believe self expression is the most beautiful gift we have as humans. What would we be without art? Art gives us a way to express ourselves- our beliefs, our morals, our background... it touches the base of everything. In such ways, art is selfish. The whole of self- expression revolves around... you.


So many religions teach selfishness to be the root of all evil. At first, that sounds right to me- nobody likes a selfish person.


But what about lovers of art? Without art, or at least the understanding of ourselves (which art allows us to achieve), we wouldn't even grasp our true beliefs. Music has developed the whole of me- mentally, emotionally and spiritually.


How do you feel about art? And from a religious stance, would it be considered sinful?

art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

when art is really good, it makes you feel like life is perfect. It' is amazingly simple!And when you walk away, you know you're wrong.
Reply:As you have stated Art is a way to express ourselves, however I do not agree that art is selfish when freely given. Art is the symbolism that a person expresses and it is our experiences that define what a lover of art will be "drawn" to a particular work.





I enjoy the works of Georgia O'Kieff, whose paintings of flowers considered "sinful" for their sugguestive nature. To me it is a freedom of being a woman on the whole, to know oneself completely ... My expierences--spiritual, mental, and emotional--connect to that freedom since I barred myself to a negative view of myself for many years.

Reply:Art is the measure of whether we are civilized or barbarians. Whoever suppresses artistic expression (as, unfortunately, Islam does) is killing a vital social characteristic in themselves.
