What is considered good art and by whose standards?

I am doing a study of "Faith and Reason" written by Pope John Paul II. Tonight we were talking about objectivity and subjectivity. Art was the example used to discuss one's own perception of good art and bad art and the universal perception of it. I am confused by the subject of art. I personally think good and bad art is subject to one's own personal opinion.

Can anyone explain to me what is 'good art'? Like Michelango, Picaso %26amp; Van Gogh versus modern art? And by whose standards is 'good art' classified as such?

I've never taken an art class, I only draw privately once in a while but I don't consider myself an artist. What books or websites can I go to to learn about art?

What is considered good art and by whose standards?
good art is art that during the Renaissance time artists painted! Michelangelo, Da Vinci as well as Raphael as excellent examples of good art! they are the kind of art that people want to see, apppreciate, where time was put into it, where there is always a theme, where the colors and techniques start to vary with the change of time and where one actually look at a painting and interpret what he or she sees because it looks so realistic and human like! the good art has high expectations and none the less, and take Michelangeo and the Sistine Ceilin and compare that to Picasso-not that i have something against him! Michelangelo shows expressions, emotion, light, darkness, did a fresco on the cupola of a chapel as well as had a theme for it and nailed it! everything when you look at it seems in its place, as though realistic, the colors vibrant yet pastel, the themes changing and the mystery is still there. Picasso on the other hand as well as other modern artists consider art taking some paint and throwing it on the canvas or making copies of the mona lisa face multiple times in color! i call that a kid's work because i can give my brother and his friends some paint and canvas and they could come up with the same stuff the so called "artists" come up with the same things or even better! art in todays society especially good art is what Europeans have in their museums such as the Louvre and D'Orsay and at Versailles too! that is art, good art to be more specific since it is not something done in a hurrty but rather with sophistication and with class! that is what sets the two arts apart: good art has more class to it while the modern art does not and yes art art defined by the society and their standards as always!
Reply:I'm not certain of any websites to learn about art, but "good art" is determined by the most powerful in society at the time. This is why the classical artists' paintings are so much different from the art being sold today at high prices.
Reply:According to Wikipedia, "Art is an act of creation, when images and objects, sights and sounds, or drawings and carvings convey the beauty and splendor of the world, or realize the imagination of the artist, for the purpose of self-expression or the shared enjoyment of its creation. Art is that which elevates our interpretation of the world and of ourselves from simple description or narrative to the sublime."

Therefore, good art can be defined by its ability to convey sublime thought to many people. Bad art conveys sublime thought to either very few people or to nobody at all. Good art transcends the natural world (the world of form), traveling through the world of the mathematicals, to the world of idea. (This intermediate world of mathematicals describes the geometry or music theory intrinsic to, but not a part of, this natural world of form.) Bad art either masturbates in the world of mathematicals (in overly technical art, such as in nonsensical studies of extreme realism or difficult musical pieces) or utterly fails to attempt to describe the surreal in its over-simplification of things (such as a one-word poem or a randomly-generated abstract piece).
Reply:Good art is intelligent art as opposed to merely beautiful art, if you can understand what I mean. It should appeal to the brain as well. There should be a lot of science in it.

Reply:art is a perception of each indivuals outlook on their world. Yes , art is always beautiful because it comes from the artist soul. we must understand that everyones perception is different and accept it. this way noone's feelings are abused or belittled. No matter what, art is always beautiful. you must find the beauty in it yourself.sonia
Reply:Good art is the art that makes you feel an emotion. Whether it be love or hate, if it's good art you should feel something. If you're indifferent to the piece then ,to you, it is not good art. Of course any piece of art work will cause different reactions to different people. This is the subjectivity of art. If you're still not sure check out the 16 elements and principles of design. They will give you basic guidelines.
