Hi, this is my first post. I really want to be an art teacher preferably in higher education. I have the following qualifications:
B-tec National - Art and Design - Merit
GNVQ Advanced - Art and Design - Merit
A Level - Art - A
Foundation Diploma - Art and Design - Merit
HND Creative Studies - Art and Design - Higher Pass
I have been told that I do not have the qualifications within art and design to teach at a 6th form level. Also, what kind of teaching course would I need to do? Thanks.
Could I become an art teacher?
Whoever told you that you are not qualified to do this would surely have been able to tell you exactly what you do need. I think you will find you need more and better art qualifications, probably at least a BA to teach at the level you want. What is required is not hard to discover with a little research and I am surprised you have come this far without finding out what qualifications you need to achieve your goals!
If you search some university websites they tell you what is needed for a particular career and also what you need to enter further education.
Good luck.
Reply:Thanks for all of your advice!
You have given me some confidence to pursue an adult education certificate in teching and a degree. Thanks for your help. Report It
Reply:not bad. not bad indeed. you can try and get a job as an art teacher still but you might have to study an additional year, seeing as you have an HND, you can turn that qualification to a degree though it depends on whether that is what you want to do. do you have examples of previous work that you've done? if so, you can take them along with you during the interview process, just to show to your employer that you have what it takes to become an art teacher. i wish you the best of luck
Reply:PGCE is the best teaching qualification to get and to do that you need to have a degree in your chosen subject. That's the way I did it.
Reply:You need to follow MERFIE's advice!. Find a college that offers a 'Top-up' year (it's another year but converts your qualification from HND to BA). Then do your MA/PHD or apply for Teacher Training?. Go and have a talk with your local art school (or the college where you completed your HND. Good Luck!
Note: Even with MA/PHD schools/colleges prefer/require a teaching qualification.
Reply:you can do everything if you really want it and try to achieve it
Reply:You need to work on the following skills.
1) can you constantly drink coffee all day, but remember to never take your cup back to the staffroom.
2) practice looking happy not stunned when kids produce rubbish work
3) wearing corduroy
4) all future clothes purchases to come from Oxfam
5) you must have an unusual haircut that is changed colour and style every half term
Good luck mate if you do become a art teacher you will have one of the best posts in the school. Your relationship with students will be special because you will teaching something that they are actually interested in as opposed to something they struggle to understand
Reply:You can do anything you put your mind to ;)
Reply:You need to have a degree in education to be an art teacher at the high school or comm. college level, and a master's or phd at the college level. If you already have a degree in art, you can pursue a Master's in Art of Teaching degree or equivalent at an accredited university to teach. If you do not have a BA, it will be difficult to get a position anywhere.
