My art teacher was showing us some images of sculptures and other art pieces the other day. One of the slides was of a sculpture of a nude man, anatomically complete, bending over, with a cactus growing out of his rear.
Is this honestly what "art" has come to?
Is my art teacher bonkers?
Has modern art gone too far?
Opinions?
Is this art?
The sad thing about art is that anything can be art. That is why theres so much crap floating around.
Reply:lol that sounds interesting...
Reply:I don't think she is bonkers. Art can be anything as long as it's something that expresses or invokes feelings. Maybe the artist was making fun of modern art with this..it could be a humorous piece of art.
Reply:lol i can understand your questioning this. Did you enter into a dialogue with him becasue that's probably what he was expecting. for some this would be art to others it's too far out presenting this in class is a good place to exeercise your opinion and so do that in class you'll grow form this dialogue
Reply:sounds like he might own some chia pets.
Reply:What qualifies as art is constantly evolving. Just because it may be disturbing to you, does not mean that it is not art. The artist may have been trying to evoke the exact emotion you experienced when you viewed the art. Therefore, yes, it is art.
Reply:that sounds like it hurts... personally i do not like that kind of art

Who is he ? Mapplethorpe ?
What is pleasing for a person might not be for another one.
I studied the subject and no matter what explanations were given : it was a question of taste at the end.
I went around so many numerous museums...........( I mastered in Tourism) and .................I frankly could not give a damn about the origins etc of a painting etc....
I am more visual I guess.......What pleases me is just what I see. I do not like being persuaded into thinking that something is better than an other.
It depends on the person........am not into provocative art which wants to draw attention no matter what and be as crude as possible to get it (my opinion)
I just think that too many people nowadays just try to get attention with whatever means, Be it art, music, etc........
It is a jungle overthere.
To me it is NOT art : it is just a crude way of trying to draw attention to himself: [the purpose is just to shock and draw attention by any means.
Ask WHY and WHAT your teacher sees in that..I know I would..Was that objictifiction of a male person on a purpose ???
my opinion,
Reply:how about a can of cambels tomato soup art is in the eye of the beholder or not.
Reply:"Traditionally the term art was used to refer to any skill or mastery, a concept which altered during the Romantic period, when art came to be seen as "a special faculty of the human mind to be classified with religion and science".[1] Generally art is a (product of) human activity, made with the intention of stimulating the human senses as well as the human mind; by transmitting emotions and/or ideas. Beyond this description, there is no general agreed-upon definition of art."
Reply:you could consider it art but i think its weird how people think every little thing is art when in reality it could be crap.
Reply:some people find naked humans a facinating piece of art created by god
Reply:Your Yahoo name is art.
Reply:Is this honestly what "art" has come to?
No, people are taking art to another level!
Is my art teacher bonkers?
Yes!
Has modern art gone too far?
Defintely
Reply:Yes, different tho!
Reply:i agree
nice name hugh jass.
Reply:it's all art
it's extremely messed up these days
last year on the news i saw a man who would dip his "thing" into organic paint and then paint a sailboar and happy faces with it, and he actually sold them for thousands...so ya...that's what it has come to!
Reply:The teacher is gay... and going bonkers.. Report him.. This is not modern art.
And if he insists, then ask him who will water the cactus.
Reply:There is no accounting for taste. I was an art major in college, and then I joined the navy. My parents come out for Boot Camp Grad. and we went to the museum of art in Chicago. Only to find the art display of nude photography, very explicit. My parents are from the back woods of Mississippi, and here we are looking at photos of a Black dude's fist up a white dude's ****. YES, that was one of the photos. Among many other graphic, mostly porn photos. I was so embarrassed. That'll teach me, huh?
Reply:There was an exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in Chicago..this installation included a pile of dirt--with yellow rubber ducks marching up it in a line....
I wouldn't want it in my living room..but yes it's art..Just because soneting is tasteful or not does or does npt make it art. Marcel Duchamp once tried to exhibit a Urinal..straight from the hardware store...he signed it R.Mutt...was it art--yes--because the artist said it was.
Art doesn't have to be pretty to be art..The purpose or function of the work--may be from a number of things--the artist may be trying tp get us to notice things-or they may be trying to say something..or they are trying got evoke an emotion. Sometimes I may miss what the statement was--but it's still art...and to bar us from seeing it because of delicate sensibilities-is that nasty little thing called censorship. About 20 years ago-an artist exhibited in Chicago-a collection of wonderful portraits.then people found out these wonderful portraits were of mass murderers..everyone was up in arms-people were angry so much time was spent-through a government grant for the arts-on mass murderers..which was exactly what the artist wanted--for people top be angry about murder-and how a murderer can look like anyone. THAT was an artist's statement through her art...she create a reaction with her work.
Sometimes some artists do push the envelope a bit unnecessarily. Just keep in mind there are tasteless people in every field.
Watch the movie Mona Lisa Smile...you'll pick up on all I just told you-and enjoy a nice movie.
Reply:art is like hypnosis. if you want to be hypnotized, then you will be. if you don't believe, then you probably won't. i don't know what that means, but you can take it to your art teacher %26amp; ask him to analyze it. he may call this b.s. "art" himself!
Reply:yep
Reply:slap her in the face next time she shows sumthing like thast
Reply:opinion...no hasnt gone to far.
art is about liberty of self expression...maybe the artist went for a prostate exam and wanted to express his feelings for this situation and voila...or just but raped
but yes i dont think that is art to be apreciated...but its still art regardless
