Art...????

I have to do a reproduction and write a paper about my selection on Impressionalism.

I chose Paris on a Rainy Day by Callebotte. I was wondering what the painting could mean and the significance of it. How could I interpret it?

Here it is http://www.artyfactory.com/perspective_d...

Thanks so much!!!

Art...????
Look at interpretation as two things:

One, the thoughts and emotions that the painting evokes in you as a viewer. Doing this makes you more aware of the audience and how artists interact with them, which is important in art theory and history.

Two, your teacher is making sure you are understanding what impressionism as a whole was about. So make sure and look through your textbook or your notes to find terms for techniques and trends in that style of painting. Then apply those to "Paris on a Rainy Day". See if you can connect your impressions with these techniques. For example, do the small brush strokes mimic rain? If so, how? And how does that make you, as a viewer, feel?

Good luck!
Reply:Maybe its an industrial age statement. Note that the human element is in the background and off to the side and that the back bldg cuts the center and its perspective is like a cruise ship barreling down on you.
Reply:Wow I always hated it when teachers asked that. To me it just looks like a nice, kinda simple impressionist painting. I don't know why we always have to ascribe "meaning" to it.

That doesn't answer your question.

But it does let me vent a little!
