Art career?

Hello. I have been thinking of going to college for Art lately. I really enjoy drawing. But I am not sure about what type of class to take. Also what type of careers you can really live off of based on art alone. My boyfriend is wanting me to get into graphic art, but I am more into actually drawing with my hands, not conjuring up pixels on the computer. What type of things can a person start a career on with drawing or painting alone. All hand work?I never finished high school so I am planning on getting my GED too, so I am not sure how to go about this or how to find out what careers are out there. So any help is appreciated. Thanks! :)

Have a wonderful day/night.

Art career?
With traditional art, there are a few things you can do, but it can be hard work making a living off that alone. You might need to do something else as well.

Some ideas:

* Show and sell original artworks in art galleries, cafes, online, etc.

* Have people commission you. They pay you for a custom drawing.

* Do the painting for shop windows, murals, etc, in public
Reply:Graphic art is considered "safe art" because it is easy to make a living from it. Its growing more and more, evening a web designer is growing. Selling art work, painting, drawing really takes a sacrifice. You might think about working at least partime somewhere while you stay loyal to the sale of your art. You will need some pieces of work, so begin to work on enough pieces to show. Then you will be ready for your dream to come true. It can come true you know, it really can. What about going to school to learn Graphic arts could at least be a way to earn money until you hands on art begin to sell. Both ways at least you are exposed to the world of art.
Reply:I got into an Art School with no High School Diploma, there are a lot of great programs out there that don't require you to have a high school diploma or GED, sense the precentage of non graduates is so high these days. Your boyffriend is right, the only way to make alot of money is graphic design, but keep in mind that a lot of graphic design comes from actual hand drawn designs. I can't make an ad picture without a sketch or without an idea in my mind. But if you want to stick to plain drawing and painting you can always hold art shows and galleries and sell your work. Get your paintings out in your community and maybe have a show at a local coffee shop. It's a hard medium to get into, but Art can be a very difficult but rewarding career. You just have to stick to it! ♥
Reply:money in graphic design lol sorry that poster is out to lunch!

Graphic design is the most popular program for anyone who likes computers but is bad at math, or who likes to draw but isn't that good. I worked in a printing house with 4 graphic designers, 1 did graphic design the other 3 worked the wearhouse like me because there are no jobs out there. Any grahpic designers I do know make minimum wage.

Older graphic designers make more money, because they are more versitile and experienced but younger ones (the ones I know anyway) have a very hard time finding good jobs.

There are other areas of the art world to get into. The one I'm most interested in is the animation industry. There are lots of different jobs, storey boarding, layout artist, background painter, concept artist, character designer, animator, clean up and inbetweening, color styleist. The 3d industry has riggers, modelers, matt painters.

Another area is illustration, or graphic noveling, and fine arts.

most artists in any industry are free lance. They get contracts with what ever company or person and once it's finished they look for something elce. If you find a good course in animation, you could always do freelance work in illustration as well, sometimes illustrators get work in the animation industry for various things.

Research all the art schools you can find to see what their different programs are, I know mine takes people who havn't graduated. (even one who was in jail and never graduated) If you can convince them that you are willing to put the work in.

Try to find a school and program that suit your personality. Everybody learns differently and no matter what program you decide on make sure it has a good life drawing course(s)

I go to www.Maxthemutt.com for Classical animation, all of the graduates are working.
