Islamic art?

why is islamic art so distinctive? how and why is Islamic art so different from the art of other reigious traditions? how are iportant islamic belief and practces reflected in various art forms?

Reply:I think that it's different because it tends to avoid iconography, although there are exceptions. There is strong religious resistance in Islam to making representations of living beings. There is also a high value placed on calligraphy- some of my personal favorite Islamic art is calligraphy. I've included a link to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's page on the nature of Islamic Art.
