UCLA Art Portfolio...?

I'm a romanian junior high school student and I'm bent on attending UCLA School of Art and Architecture. I've started to build my portfolio but they request only 5 pieces of artwork. It's pretty hard to narrow it down to only a few pieces...

My question is this: since different art schools look for different things in students' portfolios, what is UCLA's aim?

Do they prefer to see personal art or obsevational drawing? Are they interested in discovering the personality of the artist or just the skill/technique? Is illustration or concept important?

For instance: will a portrait count more than an image of a group of teenagers skateboarding? They would both be from real life, but what about the concept? I'm a fan of traditional drawing and painting. What is UCLA's preferance in art (are they liberal and creative or less flexible?)... What's they're style?

If anyone here is a student over there, could you tell me what kind of work got you into UCLA? Thanks.

UCLA Art Portfolio...?
Well, I work at a different Art School but somebody needs to answer your question.

They will be looking for a range of work - so let each piece be as different as possible.

They won't be so interested in technique since that's what they'll be teaching: so show your interests (for example, the skateboarding image sounds great).

And -- really, different art schools don't look for different things; it's pretty much boils down to: skill, technique, craft and talent.

Art activities for shapes lesson plan?

I need an art activity that involves shapes and geometry. I am reading " The greedy triangle" by Marilyn burns to the children. my objective for the children is to reconize geometric shapes in the enviroment, and to understand everything is made up of shapes. What activity would go along with this? It has to be an art activity and one I can do cheaply. I mean like with paper, markets, crayons and contruction paper. Anything that is easy to get and probably is already in the art room. The age is early elementary.

Art activities for shapes lesson plan?
After reading the "Greedy Triangle" (great book, by the way) have the children choose a shape. You can either cut some out before hand on white paper or have the children do it themselves... depends on their ability.

After they choose their shape they can either:

a) Make the shapes into "people" by decorating them, adding characteristcs, etc.

or

b) Make the shape that they chose look like something they would see everyday. Ex. A circle could be made to look like a clock, etc. With this one it would be a good idea to brainstorm ideas for each shape before the project begins. Make a list on the board!

Have fun!

or

c) Have a bunch of pre-cut shapes out for the students to make something out of.
Reply:Using Ed Emberley's "Picture Pie" as inspiration, my K-2 students used pre-cut construction paper circles, half circles, fourths and eighths to make some incredible birds and fish. I showed them how to make simple ones and then gave them more challenging pages from Emberley's book. They simply glued the shapes to colored construction paper.

I have also done the same type project - pre-cut construction paper shapes and glue - using Lois Ehlert's "Color Zoo." We see how Ehlert combines geometric shapes on top of each other to make an ox or a monkey. Then the students create an animal for our geometric zoo using the pre-cut shapes and gluing them onto construction paper. We will also use construction paper to create a "zoo" for our animals once they are created.

I know this sounds very very simplistic, but it seems to work with very young children and is certainly budget conscious.

I also divide the students into teams of four to five and give them a four foot long piece of yarn. We have shape races, which group can make the shape using the piece of yarn the fastest. I even play this game with older students who are learning more complex shapes. It is quite a challenge for four people to make an octagon out of string quickly. This is a good focus activity before the art lesson.

Putting art onto your computer?

So i need a scanner to put my art onto the internet (deviant art) but i'm not the most comuter savvy. Most scanners are 8x11 and the art work that i do is 9x12 and larger, so how am i sopposed to get my art on?

Putting art onto your computer?
Scanners come with bigger size beds. They may be slightly pricier than the cheap models, but if scanning art pieces is what you will be doing, I would invest in a better scanner. Or just take it to a professional and have them scan it for you.
Reply:Photograph it using a tripod and a camera with high megapixels and a macro lens for detail.

My paintings are usually 2x4metres, thats the only way I can document my work. If you can't get to a photography studio then just get the most natural light you can with clean white walls in the background...

Hope that helps!
Reply:cut you art 8x11. it's so easy to cutting . you only need a scissor.
Reply:my lover photograph his paintings and drawings with digital camera, easy to put photos on computer, easy to make differnet sizes of pictures.

Art portfolio?

what does a portfolio look like... I"m going to make a portfolio of some of my art to send to a college but I've never taken any art classes so i have no Idea how to begin, I have a few pieces tha I know i want to put in it I just don't know what one looks like cause I've never seen one...is there a website with a art portfoilo that i could look at ?

Art portfolio?
I recently had to make a portfolio to get into a college art program. I don't have any websites, but I can give you some pointers...

If this is to get accepted at a college or into an art program, judges are probably looking for a wide variety of work. When you get further along or before you can graduate you'll probably have to do one with work that's specific to your concentration. When choosing which pieces to use, try to focus more on the quality of the work than whether or not YOU like it--you're trying to show the judges that you are talented and capable of making quality art. This was a little difficult for me because I had lots of pieces that I was emotionally attached to, but which were not very well-done. I ended up using a few pieces that I didn't really like, but which were good examples of my skill.

You should have a list of specific requirements as to how you should present the portfolio, but if you don't one of the easiest ways is to use a simple 3-ring-binder. Buy a small but nice (simple, you don't want to distract from your artwork) binder and some of those clear plastic sheet protectors that fit into it, preferably the non-glare ones. If your works are scan or photograph your pieces (more on photographing your work later), and print them as large as possible on hihg-quality matte photopaper, or, if you don't have a good printer, take them to Kinko's or something. The quality of your portfolio is almost as important as the quality of your work--judges may toss out a crappy-looking (staples, wrinkled pages, low-quality images, etc) portfolio without even looking at it.

As far as getting the images of your work:

If you have small, flat, 2D pieces, scan them at a high resolution. If your pieces are large and/or 3D, you'll have to photograph them. Use a decent camera (not a camera phone or anything like that), and get multiple shots of 3D pieces (if you have any) to show different angles. You should take the photos outside, when it's slightly overcast (not in direct sunlight to avoid shadows, overexposure, or oversaturation), and place your pieces in front of a neutral backdrop (black, gray, or white sheet or something similar).

I like doug's suggestion as far as what order to put your pieces in. Start off with something great that will get their attention, place your least-awesome pieces in the middle where they will make less of an impact, and end with something to make them remember you, and which won't leave a bad taste in theri mouth.

That's all I can think of right now...good luck!
Reply:OK Melli,

Here are some sites. A word of caution, however. Don't take everything you read as "gospel" Pick ouit the nuggets of information that apply to you. Best way to do a portfolio is to simply make one.

In mine, I start with a strong piece, keep media grouped together, have my weakest pieces in the middle and end with a strong piece. Now, that may not wirk for you. Anyway, here are some sites. Good Luck.

Art Themed party..Any suggestions?

I am having an "Art" party this weekend for a few close friends and co workers. I have a wide range of art supllies. And was wondering if anyone here might have some art inspired ideas. For food, beverages and how to make it a fun atmosphere. Its going to be very casual. So the goofier or wilder the better.

Art Themed party..Any suggestions?
What a cool theme! Use painter's palettes as plates with little mounds of different colored food as "paint" orange = mashed sweet potato and etc. Have fun! Put utensils in old paint cans and have canvas cloths as table coverings. Maybe serve cocktails made with Van Gogh brand vodka.
Reply:Add a Shot of Espresso

Comfy chairs, light music, the heavenly aroma of coffee – what better place for your next party than the neighborhood coffee café? Your friends will find conversation easy as they discuss the merits of mocha cappuccino, soy latte or frozen white chocolate frappé. Encourage your guests to choose baked goods from the food case. You’re picking up the food and drink tab, after all. And whatever the occasion, gifts are right at hand. Whole-bean coffee, French press coffee makers, mugs and tiny gift books are perfect mementos for the guest of honor. Now, regular or decaf?
Reply:sandwich
Reply:Monet.
Reply:My son does this for new years. Everyone comes in their P.J.s and they eat breakfast foods! Sound like fun to me!
Reply:I think it would be fun to do the sugar cookies with the white icing - and then give everyone food color paints and paint brushes, and let them "paint" their work of art cookie.

The white icing is basically a box of confectioner's sugar mixed with just a little water and then mix by hand until all the lumps are out of the mixture. Then frost your cookies and let the icing set up - it will harden.

Then just make some more of the white icing and then add food coloring to these, and you can make all sorts of color combinations. These can be painted on the cookies with paint brushes.

Another fun activity would be a garnishes instruction - using speciality knife and veggies (there are books with this info). They are definitely edible works of art.
Reply:My children used to "finger paint" With pudding. In the summer I let them "paint" on their little table outside which I then just hosed off. In the winter they used cookie sheets with lips. I'd put some chocolate, vanilla and strawberry pudding out for them and let them go at it. They loved it and I didn't have to worry if they licked their fingers. LOL You could also have raisins, maraschino cherries, cuts, small marshmallows, etc. to decorate your pieces of artwork.

Or why not consider creating a holiday scene? One Christmas Eve day everyone spent the day creating a Christmas village out of Graham crackers, vanilla wafers, Royal icing, pretzels, various candy, small gingerbread cookie people, wafer cookies, sugar ice cream cones, whatever edible things I could come up with. I covered a large piece of cardboard with foil and people sat down and did their little part of the display and left, maybe came back later, etc. We ended up with 7 unique buildings, fences, roads, trees, flowers, people, an entire edible piece of artwork which I saved until it fell apart a few years ago. (lasted about 10 years)

Of course, if young and silly and not afraid of getting messy you could always create art on each other. (better warn guests beforehand though). People could wear swimsuits (or not) and using chocolate, whipped cream, jellies and jams, sauces, etc. mustard, whatever, paint each other's body

.

Whatever - have fun!.

How important is art school in a career at oil painting? Are self teaching and art association classes enough?

I'm learning to oil paint, and doing very well at it. I think my work is almost good enough to sell already.

I am wondering, to be a very good painter, do you think I need art school? Classes are $600 each, and I am disabled with bipolar disorder, so I do not know if I could handle the commute and having to go to class regularly. I would also have to take many prerequisites before I got to oil painting. Some I do need, like composition and color theory. I think I could talk the professors out of some of the others since I already have a math degree from that same university and am disabled and sorta poor. As an alternative, there is a local arts association that offers courses for $150.

I know I NEVER could have taught myself mathematics/geology. I also know that a lot of artists are self-taught. I was gifted at mathematics (was getting a PhD in geophysics before disability), and art appears to be the same way.

Am I cheating myself by skipping art school? Thank you!

How important is art school in a career at oil painting? Are self teaching and art association classes enough?
I went to Art School--Kutztown Univ., and while I learned some great things--the best part about taking art classes is the commiseration and inspiration from your instructors and classmates!

Now, the local one can do just as much as going to Art School--trust me. As long as you learn new skills and have others to inspire you, local will do.

My opinion--but backed with some experience.
Reply:Learn your art which ever way works for you, but if you are serious about making a living at it, take some business classes.
Reply:You should certainly try to get some formal education if you are looking to sell your work. I think the most important part of learning any art is a great teacher.

From there, it seems unfortunate that the art world is often based more upon making connections and following post-modern trends, rather than talent or meaning placed into artwork. It's a tough road, but good luck!
Reply:i think its very important you would be amazed at the things you could learn and if your good you can probably get a scholarship.

hey you can only get better i think you should consider art school

Ideal art!!!!?

if I were to sell art,

or

if you were to buy some art

what is your favourite art, what would you buy

what image would you like to see?

what art has any1 brought recently? what was it off

who is your favourite artist?

I know few questions but would be grateful for answers, thankyou

Ideal art!!!!?
In terms of purchasing art for myself, I have bought reproductions of Van Gogh (Starry Nights), Monet (Water Lilies and Wild Poppies), and Norman Rockwell (various), among others.

Most recently, I bought a student reproduction of a Van Gogh called "The Night Cafe" and had it nicely framed as a housewarming gift for someone who has a pool table in their home.

Several of my friends are theme collectors so I often buy them art or craft gifts that fit their themes....among them are lighthouses, cows, pigs, cats, flora, etc..

If you are planning to sell at art shows or craft fairs, I would advise that you produce at least a few works that fit the theme of the fair itself or that are related to some of the events that will take place...such as still-lifes of antique bicycles for a bike race, farm scenes for an agricultural event, historical buildings from the area where the show will be held, etc... Also, bring along a collection of your personal favorites (because an artist's emotions are reflected in his/her work and you are likely to find customers for ANY theme at ANY time if they relate to your art.)

I won't pick a favorite artist because I like to remain open. Right now, if I could afford it, I would LOVE to own an original work by Bev Doolittle!

Best of Luck and Bless You!!
Reply:I personally like symbolic art, where the message is more important than the realism. I like to stop and think what the artist is trying to say. I also like graphic arts, painting styles that are colorful, bold, and graphic.

---------------

Have you learned about Design Types?...it is the study of people and there interests. It be helpful when you are selling artwork. You can often tell what art a person is interested in just by what they wear.

If a person wears toned down clothing, nutral browns %26amp; greens, they can be considered "Naturalist Type." They would most likely be interested in artworks of nature and animals.

...if you have paintings in your gallery that are of nature, you can guide them to an area where you have some nature paintings displayed.

If a person wears black clothing with a small hint of color, they can be considered "Artistic Type." They would most likely be interested in artworks of all one color, very plan, but with a small accent of color that stands out.

If a person is wearing jeans and t-shirt, most men, they are "Designer Type." They usually like artworks with mixed shapes, organic lines with sharp edges and points.

If a person wears toned kakies and white shirt with lots of horizontal lines, they are considered "Classical Type." Most likely they would like classical paintings, Baroque, Leonardo, ect. Paintings that are highly decorated and horizontal lines.

Hope the best, Goodluck.
Reply:Art is a very subjective topic. There is no such thing as ideal art. I like most types of art when they are done with talent - figurative, abstract, contemporary...
Reply:I'm very picky about art.

My favourite artist is Franz Marc.

But even then, I am choosy about his work. I only like the tiger, the foxes, and the cat.

I love paintings of animals. Done in a loving and appreciative way.

Sue Boettcher is another one of my favourites. But maybe that is because she paints the same subjects as I do, but better.

And there is a Japanese artist, Tatsuya Ishiodori who has painted some pieces I am crazy about.

The key word is "SOME".

I don't like ALL of Marc's art work, nor ALL of Ishiodori's. I have only seen Boettcher's "Cats in a Tapestry Garden" collection, and have loved all of the pieces.

Whatever speaks to me, tugs at my heart, is what I love.

Some people have huge spaces in dramatic environments and they buy paintings which complement their surroundings.

Some people fall in love with one particular painting and imagine it hanging in their favourite room.

Personally, I want three Marcs paintings if I ever get rich. I'd choose the three I already mentioned. I have a print of the tiger one already, and would love to get the foxes next.

My home is hung with my own paintings - whenever I lose a friend to death, the only way to cope with my grief is to paint it. I have lost more animal friends than human. Generally, animals are physically more beautiful than humans to me and I love exploring their spirituality on canvas.

They also live in my ideal world, which would be devoid of most humans and the pain and destruction they inflict on everything in Nature.

My world is longing for perfection - harmony, beauty and grace. Expressed by colours and juxtapositions of cats and birds living happily in a garden of flowers and butterflies.

This image is my one finger holding on. Take it a step further and you get "Why can't everyone get along and forget about

their differences?"

So, that is the image that calls to me. What I want to see everyday, what I want to be reminded of, even when the news on t.v. is screaming otherwise.

I can't afford to buy originals.

Even if I could, I couldn't keep them in my home as the humidity and light here are totally unsuitable for preserving the original colours.

You have to be rich to buy paintings, and everyone rich enough to buy buys for their own reasons.

So I guess I haven't helped you at all, as I am not rich!

But I wanted to share my love of my 3 favourite artists with someone!

Art project idea?

ok i need to do an art project for this art fair %26amp; its got to be good but im horrible art wats an easy project that looks really good

Art project idea?
paint a landscape or still life of fruit. it's pretty simple, and teachers seem to love it. hope this helps!
Reply:You need to provide more detail for this question. Are you limited to only certain media or a certain size? Are there any restriction or guidelines for this project? Here are some quick suggestions knowing nothing about the guidelines. You could do a collage. Cut out different magazine patterns, pictures, and drawings to create a background and some sort of scene. Or, just use the patterns and colors you find in a magazine to make a large pattern or mosaic design of your own.

What would you call art?

Please think carefully about this one. Don't immediately jump to the conclusion that art is anything that is pretentious or unentertaining. Most critically acclaimed movies are considered art. But how 'artistic' does a movie to have to be to be considered 'art'. If a movie that is 'artistic' suddenly not art the moment it entertains? Would you say there is an art to all film making, except some entertain and others don't? There are plenty of films I've seen with so much artistry that goes far beyond just script writing and acting. Think of the big budget epics for example. Star Wars for example has artistry in set design, prop design, model and miniatures, special effects, costumes, action scenes, sound effects and etc. But it entertains as well. Do you think it's necessary for a movie to not entertain to be considered art? There's also a case where some movies that are entertaining to one person is not entertaining to another. Please think about this.

What would you call art?
Anything that is created by an artist and appreciated by at least 1 person other than the creator is art.

Art Center College of Design?

Would it be better for me to go to a university such as USC or UCI and then transfer to Art Center College of Design? I'd like to pursue a career in arts and would like to know as much as I can about every type of art; from photography to acting. Suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

Art Center College of Design?
If you're planning to transfer to Art Center, I wouldn't suggest you go to a university first. You will be in so much debt in the end you'll wish you never did that. The best option is to go to community college first then transfer. If you can check out Pasadena city college, it has a good art program.

If you want more of a general art education, I wouldn't suggest Art Center. Like most private art schools, they have their students focus on a particular form of art to study on, whether it be traditional art, computer graphics, illustration, etc. Because of this, I'm not sure if you'll be completely satisfied. Also, Art Center is more focused on the commercial aspect to art, even if you're majored in fine art.

But, if you're trying to save a bit of money because you're pursuing a career in the arts, I suggest you check out CSU Long beach. It has one of the largest art departments in the nation, and is very respectable in its visual and performing arts programs. I'll provide for you the link to their art department website. Hope that helps a bit. Good luck.

Art art art?
In art we are always reinventing the wheel. So with this in mind, stop looking at art books and start reading you newspaper. Find something in the modern world that still reflects the traditions (or lack of) from the past and then put these ideas into you work. Good luck with the project!
Reply:Go with Andy Warhol %26amp;Piicasso that has plenty of possibilities
Reply:OK, here's the deal. It's an art project, right? So, think over your everyday things, history, what happendbefore if we improved, or did we fail in some things, was there war, is it a disaster? This kind of thing, an imageof your future drawing will definitely swell up in your mind

Which art school we should chose?

My son would like to study art for movie design. Recently, the following colleges offered him admission: Rhode Island Institute of design, School of Art Institute of Chicago, Maryland Institute College of Art, Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Arts (department of design). Who can give us some advice help my son make his decision? He did not get any financial aid form Rhod Island Institute of design.

Which art school we should chose?
No matter where he goes, education is all about what you put into it. I'm working on a doctorate in music, and I always find it a little amusing how much students fret over which school to go to.

Go to the one that is a good compromise and convenience geographically and economically. When you get there, take advantage of everything they've got.

The truth is, even at the "best" schools, students don't fully employ all of the resources.

Art teachers?

So, I think I want to be an art teacher but my mom and sister say that I am "to good for that". What do you think about this? How has the experience been like for you teaching art? Do you sell/display your art outside teaching? Thanks for your time.

Art teachers?
i mostly make work for myself now. i never was into the commercial side of art too much even in college. i enjoy teaching and it gives me enough time to pursue my photography on my own terms. i do know many other art teachers who produce and sell their own work.

i take a little objection to your mom and sis's 'too good' comment. good teachers are needed in all subjects at all grade levels. it's not a high paying profession but it can be highly rewarding. personally the kids make it all worthwhile for me.
Reply:I disagree with the idea about anyone being "too good" to be a teacher. We need the very best and most talented people to have an influence on students.

One thing about being an art teacher - it can be a little tricky to find a job. Even in areas that have big overall teaching shortages, getting an art job can be competitive. So, you might want to be aware of that. Think about whether you would be willing to move to the southern part of the US (if you don't already live there) - there are usually more vacancies in those areas.

I don't teach art, but our school's art teachers do sell and display their work. It's been in the local museum before. Also, they frame paintings and sell them in our teacher workroom - lots of people buy them!
Reply:I'm not an art teacher but is you are extremely talented you should take art further and try and get them seen by people or if you are better at anything else take it depends what you like and what are good paid

Have you a twelve inch ruler and several multi-coloured pencils, plus a few different sized coins and a good quality (bigger than A4) piece of paper. Start in the approximate middle of the paper with two three inches parallel lines of different colour. Add as many lines, triangles, circles etc. as you feel like. You will know when the work is finished. Just pop your initials down the bottom corner. Viva !
Reply:look up those artists, and take a look at their work, then make a simple drawing trying to do it in the same style. You don't have to be able to draw a straight line.

Art uni graphic design no GCSE's??

Hi, i'm currently on an art and design access course. I have no GCSE's because i was ill during the time i was meant to take them.

I want to do graphic design in university. I have a whole portfolio of impressive work (life drawings, graphic art and designs, posters etc) and my tutors have said they're impressed with my work.

My question is, is it possible I could still be accepted?? if they see my portfolio and are impressed with the work?

I'm asking because, it is an art uni, and i'm doing an access course right now. Do you think i still have a chance??

Art Portfolio Difficulty: Extra Questions i appreciate for advice?

From my last question, I do admit that i feel better from recieving the helpful hand of advices given from really helpful people that have experience or knowledge in this area.

Thank you. I appreciate any further help with my difficulty.

-Im not sure where to start as i know that the "theme" of a portfolio has to have something to do with the art course i want to apply for (Design: Visual Communication which includes...Illustration, Graphic Design, Animation..etc.)

Any pointers or advice?:S

Im really not sure what would deem appropriate.

-Using artwork from school is possible i have read from some responses, but im worried, what if my artwork in art class does not fit in or connect with the "theme" of my portfolio, it would not seem appropriate?

-I know that less than 6 months has been advised to be enough time for preparation, however im considering it on top of heavy schoolwork and an art class itself to work on :'(??

I sincerely appreciate any help provided

Reply:Hi;

I know that you feel a little overwhelmed with your work from school and doing your portfolio. But don't worry, make time for it and believe me its possible; I've done it... twice!

You could use the work from school, but if it doesn't relate to what you want to show than don't bother.

I you are applying for Illustration or Animation even Graphic you portfolio must show at least 2 life drawings, especially for the former two. It's important for the school to know that you are on your way (if not already there) of knowing the human anatomy.

I think that your work should show a range of things that you can do. Maybe the use of: watercolor, chalk, pastels, graphite. If you are applying for Illustration or Animation; you can have maybe characters that you've created, a background, make sure you know tone (light and shadows) well and show it off...

If you feel that you are not pushing yourself enough, then do it... Start now there's no better time. Try new things, experiment with new mediums, read, get inspired, try to get critiques from your teachers, try to draw and paint thing you're not use to paint... and most of all don't draw what you are comfortable with... when you are pushing yourself, try to get out of the things that you generally draw and experiment, because if you already mastered let's say... drawing still life, then go draw humans or animals, or nature... but push yourself to the limit... it's a great thing to do for an artist...

Observe, that's the key for everything, have a sketchbook with you all the time... and draw things that interest you all the time... it's a good start...

Hope everything works out for you, and hope this helped you out and answered some of your questions...

Take care :-)
Reply:i just went through this. the best thing to do is to arange your portfolio as they request, and if that did not do that then start creating the very best you can. plus what you already have.

put the two or three new best examples in first then add some of the others in. they are not looking for master level work they are looking for improvement and talent. if you could do work that is at a masters level then you don't need school do you?

add to the back of every page the information on the piece. (everything you can remember about it, take pics while doing it, medium ect. )
Reply:I won't pretend to know exactly what the review committee is looking for, but from my experience and what little I picked up going through Art school, what they're looking for is potential. They'll want to see an ability to comprehend, adapt to, and work with what will be taught in whatever direction you choose. If you choose Illustration, submit what you feel to be the best and/or most relevant illustration, and follow suit for other courses. Remember that your portfolio, at this point in your life, is not supposed to be perfect or Gallery/Professional quality. Simply, provide your best, and let the work do the talking without your worrying about whether its good enough or not. Even if you aren't accepted, don't let that stand in your way. If you're serious about the pursuit of creative expression, and keep moving forward with your life you will end up where you need to be, and the right school will eagerly open its doors to you as long as you keep trying.
Reply:I am also doing a design/illustration portfoilo right now and I really know the pressure of making it look perfect as much as possible. lol.

-for the theme, it would be better if it is something that you are really familiar of: your style. Look at all your works and see your "style." With that, try to look for colors, fonts, and random illustrations that best corresponds with your style. Although it would be better to have a white/cream (or even black) background to make your designs pop out and not let the "theme" be the center of attraction. It also helps to look for portfolios of other designers in the web like: http://www.sergeseidlitz.com/

http://www.dekoreone.com/

http://www.thebeastisback.com/index2.htm...

The theme should reflect who you are as a designer/artist. Do you like funky colors? classic style? Minimalist? Retro? etc. Because in the end, the portfolio is something that should represent you or the "you" that you want the people to see.

-do not worry with the work not being with the theme. Again, don't let the "theme" eat your works. There is only one question to consider when putting a work in the portfolio: "is this one of my best work?" If it is, then put it! Don't put a crappy work just because it fits with the theme. Remember, the portfolio should showcase your best works.

-I hope this helps. Goodluck!

Why is BallPoint Pen Art the most undeveloped art movement in history?

Why is BallPoint Pen Art the most undeveloped art movement in history?

The inventor of a ballpoint pen was Mr. John J. Load a citizen of the United States, residing at Weymonth, in the county of Norfolk and Common Wealth of Massachusetts, patented the first ballpoint pen. J.J. Load patented the first American ballpoint pen on Oct. 30, 1888, registration No. 392,046. In 1938 the Hungarian Biro brothers out of Argentina retooled and manufactured such an instrument worldwide.

The Bic Pen Company bought out that Biro patent and thus far sold 100 billion of those ballpoint pens worldwide. Needless to say Bic redesigned that pen and today it out sells all other models. A ballpoint pen is the most sold, used or popular writing or drawing instrument in history yet undeveloped as an art medium or movement. How can the most used art medium or instrument in history go unrecognized?

A ballpoint pen has the subtlest half-tone line, longest flowing lines and darkest rich multi-colored inks in history plus billions of users. How can such a great art medium go undeveloped?

Why is BallPoint Pen Art the most undeveloped art movement in history?
Pen and Ink has been around fore the past four thousand years unlike other art mediums or movements. Pens have elevated all realms of society not just the fine art world. Literature, science, mathematics, graphics, commercial art, cartooning, advertising, marketing, sales, public relations and many other important aspects of society have been improved or elevated via pen and ink!

The Bible, all old manuscripts, books, documents, reports and many drawings were completed thousands of years before other art mediums came into existence. Society or mankind has benefited from the usage of Pen and Ink. Therefore, comparing other mediums such as paint is rather absurd if facts or realism is to be considered. How many treaties, checks, documents or books are drafted with paint?

The most used, sold or popular instrument is always the greatest medium if statistics plays into practice? History is defined by such facts because it’s real and something people go by! Bic alone has sold over one billion ballpoint pens not to mention all other companies involved. A ballpoint pen is one of the world’s greatest selling items therefore among the most popular or practical products in history.

The value of such is therefore remarkable or unparalleled. Over looking such facts or materials certainly is a silly notion or concept to say the least! A ballpoint pen’s extra-fine or fine line is the subtlest in history. No other camera-ready art medium can make that statement and be factually correct. The ballpoint pen also produces the longest flowing lines in history, which is fantastic, if spontaneous ness is important as an artist! ISO or DIN archival rated ballpoint pen inks are now on the market and that’s extremely important because of their brilliant colors and steadfastness.

BallPoint Pen art or drawings are undeveloped because the art world is slow to recognize new mediums. It’s also lacking artists willing to speck-out or present what they have!
Reply:Because it's cheap, it looks cheap and no one would pay a hundred bucks for something that their 3 year old kid can do
Reply:Because sometimes it doesn't flow right and you get a big clump of ink coming out instead of a nice flowing, liquid line
Reply:paint
Reply:its ideal for writting words. Not drawing pictures. it's not good for shading - NO pens are an ideal form for artwork. also theres only a few colors of bic ink and your finished product would look poor....
Reply:They've just been waiting for you to draw something!
Reply:As a drawing tool, the ballpoint pen is usually confined to the sketch pad and "back of the napkin" doodles. However, like everything, there are artists who can elevate just about any tool above it's mundane reputation. There are groups out there that take ballpoint pens more seriously as a drawing tool than most of your respondents here.

Here are some links:

http://groups.msn.com/ballpointpenart/

On this MSN Group you will find plenty of examples of why many people DON'T think much of ballpoint pen art, but you will also find some remarkable standouts.

Okay so today I received my report card and I achieved a D in Art Fundamentals, my mom looks at this and yells at me to go study.

Now what I told her is that art is a talent and unlike Math and English it would be impossible to study it. I'm no artist, it's not my fault I do not understand concepts and that my creativity is lacking. What do you guys think I should say to convince her that Art is impossible to study as in making concepts and being creative?

Art vs. nature?

art is seen to be an aesthetic representation of reality (aka. nature). do you think this is true? to what extent does art accurately depict nature, or should art be condemned in society because it is seen to be false and untruthful?

Art vs. nature?
sure i think art is an aesthetic representation of nature, and it can be fairly accurate.

why should we ban it, who doesnt like art?
Reply:"Art verses Nature" is merely one form of expression in art. Art has multitudes of genres and movements besides the Realism that emulates natural aesthetics. Your suggestion to condemn the whole field of art because of one category is like throwing the baby out with the bath water. In literature there are numerous literary categories: novel, drama, folktale, nonfiction, fiction, science fiction, biography, autobiography, mystery, history, poetry, anthology, mythology, etc. Are you going to condemn and band all of literature because you are not in favor of one literary genre? Of course not, that would be absurd. Art encompasses a proliferation of genres and movements besides Realism:

Reply:Man is a part of nature; art is created by man therefore I believe art resembles a part of nature. I do not think art should be condemned although I believe art is slowly dying due to the almighty dollar.
Reply:Art itself is never false or untruthful , but all that Art that IS false/untruthful , should be condemned , as it is likely to 'corrupt' (if you like ) the viewer/reader/listener %26amp; gives rise to feelings like yours , that maybe all Art is so .

In some forms of art , it is not necessary that it depict Life exactly , but at the very least , it must reflect the artist's true mind %26amp; not be some concoction intended only to impress critics .
Reply:there's no ample replacement for the real thing.
Reply:Art is expression. It does not necessarily have to represent any existing physical states.

Art includes a diverse range of forms including music, movies and wide range of design works. If Art is to be condemned, what kind of life will it be on this planet?

Art has nothing to do with God, or the truth attached with him.

Art director career questions?

I am in high school and was thinking about the career I would like to pursue. When I thought about it, I came up with being an Art director. My question is what is it like being an Art director? Hows the pay? What is an Art directors everyday life like? How is the job opportunity and security? Is it difficult to find a job straight out of college or is it fairly easy? Please answer all these questions and feel free to add info about this proffession that you think I might want or need to know. Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day!

Art director career questions?
If u like art stuff, u would love to be an art director. u would be very busy and it's fun. If u move to big cities such as New York, Dubai, London, u would get really good opportunities about art stuff. If u are an american citizen and move to Dubai, u are gonna earn about $20000 a month. In New York, u are gonna earn $15000 a month. In VA, u are gonna earn $6000 a month. I don't know about anyother cities.

Good luck

A friend of mine was an art director and he designed Marineland of the Pacific many years ago. Probably not today, someone else did that.

Art directors work for architects, movie studios, commercial producers, ad agencies.

It's a good job.
Reply:It's a challengeing and interesting job, but you would probably get a degree in design and start work as a designer, then work your way up to art director.

You have time to research this so here are some references that would help you. Go to www.aiga.org which is the American professional organization for design. They have articles and information and design careers and design education.

Maybe get a subscription to HOW magazine. It covers a wide range of design issues but it is accessible for a beginner to understand and enjoy.

A good book that provides clear explanations of career options is Becoming a Graphic Designer: A Guide to Careers in Design. The author is Steven Heller.

Hope this helps. When you start thinking about what schools to consider, get back on the site and you'll get ideas about that too.

I'm just about to go into my 4th year at secondary school (I don't know what the equivalent is in America) and I've taken art as one of my options. My new teacher told us to go onto our vle (virtual learning environment) to get our homework for the holidays, so when everyone broke up, thats what we did, and we have to add more detail/finish off etc to our past art work in our sketchbooks. The only problem is is that our OTHER art teacher (a right old bat!) took in our books at the end of the year, saying we wouldn't need them. The homeworks due in first day back, and i don't know what to do! I don't want to give my new teacher a bad impression of me, because i normally give my homework in on time. What do you suggest i should do?! I've started just sketching random stuff, just to keep practising, but do you think thats enough? help!!!!

thanks in advance!

oh, and if anyone's going to be rude, then please don't bother answering!

thanks! =D

Art homework dilema!!!! help!!!?
I'd consider turning in what you are able to complete between now and your first day. You really don't have much of an option here. I'd focus on quality rather than quantity.
Reply:Isn't there some way to get in touch? Any word on what anyone else is going to do? Anyone you can ask?

Was there a piece you did previously that you could think back to... Something you remember well, maybe it was something that had you fairly inspired so you did a nice job %26amp; were fairly proud of it?

If so, what about trying to do that one again, but taken a step further, and then finish that one off as you would if you still had it? Then at least you could say that, though you didn't have any of your old work, that one idea stuck out in your mind and you wanted to work in it more. I would think turning in more practice would work as well. Though it seems like the idea is adding more detail %26amp; finishing the work - so I'd make a point to try to turn in more complete items so at least they'll fit in with what he was expecting.

If that's not good enough then the teacher can just get bent!
Reply:Just find some old sketches in your sketchbook and finish them up,you could add color, extra lines etc. If you have a blank page do a abstract illistration because there easy and look good. Thats how I did my assignments at the last minute.
Reply:Try to contact a schoolmate that might have kept the book or at least written it down. Call your school librarian to see if they have a copy of the book and call and ask your school administrators if they are not on holiday and tell them of your problem and see if they'll let you look at the book.

Yes, daily sketching helps very much. It keeps you from losing skill and keeps your creativity flowing so that you don't get artists block.
Reply:what do you need to know kid? Ill show you some applications just three things and you ll do well making an impression of anything you want
Reply:is there a way you can contact your old teacher? if not, then do what you have been doing. maybe try to re-create the projects you did in your old class and fix them up like your new teacher wants. when the first day of school comes along, tell your new teacher your problem. hopefully he/she will like that you did something instead of going in empty handed.

Profession determines the martial art?

Hey. Need to ask a question. Why is it that there are a huge abundance of engineers doing martial arts, more so than other professions? From what I've seen, internet, friends, family, a lot of martial artists are engineers (especially biomedical engineers and mechanical engineers), rather than accountants (I know one who does martial arts, but thats it), teachers, etc.

I understand that perhaps doctors and dentists may not be martial artists (from an earlier question I asked and also since they rely on use their hands), but why not the other professions?

Also, to those who do martial arts when they were younger, did you ever manage to find time to juggle your studies and your martial arts as well?

One last question referring to an earlier question I asked here. If I were to become a dentist, since I have to take additional precautions and risks, which martial art would be optimum for me (I really would not like to do internal arts).

Please give your opinion, thank you.

Profession determines the martial art?
Tang Soo Do. Will suit your studies and will give you a full understanding of your body.
Reply:In the past, most martial artists knew about medicine and they were doctors.

I suggest TaiChi would be suitable for u. TaiChi is not only a martial arts, but also includes something else. It's really amazing!
Reply:Actually i know of alot of doctors training in Martial arts, in fact, i think health profecionals make up a huge portion of Martial artists

You also see alot of security guards and teachers, maby its just where I train. Also police guys train there. There are really alot more profecions than you mentioned man, so maby its just where you are from that people train from those places

Oh and train in TKD, thats what my chiro does to avoid hand injurys
Reply:any proffesion any martial art i think u have been experiencing coincedence damn i cant spell lol
Reply:I would suggest Kendo, the discipline, precision and focus will be helpful for your chosen profession. And the armor will protect you from the most serious injury.

You can consider BJJ too, since there's not much throwing (which can lead to many kind of arm, neck %26amp; shoulder injuries) and focus mainly on grappling.

The BJJ rules generally forbid small joints (wrist, fingers etc) manipulation, neck cranks and leg locks. Training etiquette is to apply the submission slow and steady, giving you enough time to tap out to prevent injury. It is very safe.

Did I mentioned it is also tough training? :)

Reply:The sacks and stuffed anumal - charcoal

the Irises - color

If children will be viewing, they'll enjoy figuring out these pieces.

I think your figure drawings are good, but need refining. I would suggest studying/drawing internal anatomy - muscules, bones. Overall though, you have an interesting style.

Good work !
Reply:I love the "heart" the "irises" and the crinkly bags are awesome. I know you can't use it but "statue" is very, very nice.

Art vs. nature?

art is seen to be an aesthetic representation of reality (aka. nature). do you think this is true? to what extent does art accurately depict nature, or should art be condemned in society because it is seen to be false and untruthful?

Art vs. nature?
sure i think art is an aesthetic representation of nature, and it can be fairly accurate.

why should we ban it, who doesnt like art?

On this MSN Group you will find plenty of examples of why many people DON'T think much of ballpoint pen art, but you will also find some remarkable standouts.
