Art Therapist!?!? I'm Very Confused.?

Ok, so i've finally got my calling and its to become an art therapist. There are so many different avenues to go i don't know where to start.

I was thinking that if i go to school major in psychology and minor art. Then i would go to grad school to become an art therapist. I read somewhere that it takes a maximum 1 year of grad school to become an art therapist. Well, am i on the right track? Does this make sense?

So total it would be 5 years of school roughly.

Anyone have ideas as a back up profession as well.

Art Therapist!?!? I'm Very Confused.?
You are on the right track. In order to get licensed to do therapy in most states, you need a master's degree in social work, counseling or psychology. Usually your certification as an art therapist is an add on after you have your master's. To find out more about this, go to the Art Therapy Association website.

If you get a Master's in Counseling, you already have your back up because once you get a state license, you can be hired as a regular therapist. Another option is to take a school counseling program so that you can work in the public school's as a counselor.

Most graduate programs require at least 45 credits, which can take more than a year. You may find some shorter programs, but make sure they are accredited or it is a waste of your money.
