Removing album art from in/on windows folders?

I have my mp3's organized in folders in windows xp. i have had it like this for years. windows used to automatically change folder album art to match mp3 tag of the mp3(s) that were inside that folder. now that i have most of my mp3's updated, tagged and embedded album art in most of them. i want to get rid of the album art embed in the folders, because some of them are wrong and so the images in that folder can thumbnail through. but i cant seem to get rid of the art unless i delete the folder itself. is there a way to refresh all the folders and/or possibly re-search for new album art for folders that actually does match the mp3(s) that are in the folders. also the folder(s) art wont let me override the whatever image is being displayed. i tried changing the icon but it just wont take. its like part of the folder now, even if i move that folder to another computer it still displays the same images. any info? thanks.
