Child artist selling art?

My daughter has inhereted her great grandmother art ability. My daughter (9) wants to sell her art online on places such as ebay. She draws, paints, does pencil drawings, on canvas, and such.

She is still developing her artistry skills, and i'm concerned it could be discouraging if nothing sells. She is convinced she will sell out on her art because she sold everything she had at a local college event. My daughters art sold out the first hour while the other childrens stayed:(...She made over $200.00 for their event for her art which was just simple/basic kid art on printer paper. It took her maybe 2-3 hours to create it all.

She has since started in large canvas, and wants to persue the art selling thing to make money for toys. I think its a great idea, and dont mean to be discouraging to her but at the same time I worry about if it doesnt sell will she be really upset.

What do you espiring artists think? Should I let her or crush the dream?

Child artist selling art?
I think you should let her try, just as long as she realizes that it might not always be so easy to sell everything.

I find it interesting that she's so willing to part with her work. I never have been, and have sold very little (and mostly against my will, after much cajoling) because I'm too attached to what I do. My handicapped son is now painting, and I'm trying to break this attachment to artworks, even though everything he produces is even more precious to me than what I do myself. I try to give myself the time to "digest" and absorb his paintings, preparing myself to (maybe) part with them after a little time goes by and other paintings take their place.

It's good your daughter doesn't have this attachment and, instead, seems to have quite a marketing bent. Good for her!

Edit:

I agree with hushcolours's comment below. If you do decide to go on eBay, do it for her yourself. Just let her participate visually, by letting her see how things are going.
Reply:Don't discourage her. I think you should let her..many people use ebay and they might like some of her paintings.

I think it's a great idea.

:)
Reply:Never discourage that kind of talent. It is ok to be afraid of how she might react to no one buying certain things. Let her know that every one of her projects is special to someone out there, it might be that that person just hasn't seen it yet. Most painters and artists have those pieces that just hasn't inspired someone yet, but they never give up hope that someday, someone will be moved to buy it.
Reply:I would say go for it!! She has to learn to take criticism and accept that not everyone will be into her work. However, if she's already selling paintings at 9 and is that gifted, I wouldn't be that concerned. I happen to collect art...I'd be interested in a painting!! Especially if she's that young and becomes a famous artist someday. I'd have an original piece!!! Email me...seriously!!!
Reply:Hi,

I would just like to add the following remark.

I think that the Ebay account will stay on your name for now due to her age ?

Even so, I guess she'll acess the account ? Or not ?

Mind that there's alot of phishing and lots of it seems quite «realistic». Talk to her about it. Take the appropriate actions and be careful with your financial data. Without her having any bad intentions, your daughter may be prompt to enter financial information into a less scrupulous website. Even we grownups can be fooled, moreover a child.

Kind regards and good luck,

José
